12/591 Pte Norman BEDFORD 12th Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment.
Killed in Action 1st July 1916
Norman was born at Sheffield circa 1891. The 1901 census record can place him living at 3 Priory Place, Netheredge, Sheffield with his parents Arthur and Emily and younger sister Edith. In 1911 the family can be seen living at 8 Kenwood Road, Sharrow, Sheffield.
Norman enlisted aged 23yrs at sheffield on 10th September 1914 at which time he is employed as a mining engineer. He was inducted into the ranks of the Sheffield Battalion the York and Lancaster regiment.
The battalion embarked SS NESTOR at Devonport 20th December 1915 arriving and disembarking at Alexandria, Egypt on 1st January 1916. The Battalion embarked the HMT Briton on 10th March 1916 and the following morning set sail for France.
On the 16th March 1916 the battalion entrained at Marseilles heading for the North Western theatre of the war in France.
On that fateful morning of the 1st july 1916 Norman fell along with the best part of his battalion and he is now remembered on the Thiepval Memorial.
