12-2000 Pte George Alwyn ASHTON 12th Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment
George Alwyn ASHTON was born in 1897 at Grenoside in the parish of Ecclesfield, Sheffield. The 1901 census shows him living with his father Harvey ASHTON and siblings at 72 Woodside Lane, Grenoside. The 1911 census shows him simply at Grenoside.
On the 24th January 1916 aged 18 and recorded as a student George enlisted at the corn exchange Sheffield. He was allotted service number 12-2000 and placed in the ranks of the 15th Service Battalion the York and Lancaster Regiment. He would be posted to the 12th Battalion, the Sheffield Pals, on the 14th June 1916.
He is listed in Gibson and Oldfield as having taken part in the first day of the Somme offensive.
George left the army on the 9th February 1919 at which time he was with the 13th Battalion.
He passed away on the 26th February 1985 in South East Hampshire aged 88.
