Ernest FORD was born in the St Johns area of Sheffield in 1894 to parents being Joseph and Ada.

Ernest can be found in the census record of 1901, living at 38 Corporation Street, Sheffield. In 1911 he has moved to 88 Mushroom Lane, Sheffield.

It was in 1911 that Ernest first signed up with the military and was placed with the 4th Hallamshire Battalion of the York and Lancaster Regiment and given service number 1393. At this time he is shown to be employed as a table knife grinder.

He would marry in 1916 to Mary and they would have their only child Leslie in 1917.

Ernest entered France with his battalion on 13th April 1915 and here would continue something of a turbulent period of service as we will see from his service record conduct sheet.

29.09.1914 – charged with being absent without leave and awarded 8 days confined to billets

02.03.1915 – charged with overstaying his pass and awarded 6 days confined to billets

15.03.1915 – charged with being absent from billet and awarded 10 days confined to billets

01.12.1915 – charged with having a dirty weapon and awarded 7 days Field Punishment No2

08.01.1916 – charged with hesitating to obey an order and awarded 28 days Field Punishment No2

16.02.1916 – charged with losing clothing and awarded 6 days deprivation of pay

21.06.1916 – Appointed rank of unpaid L/Cpl

10.02.1917 – reverts to rank of private

13.05.1917 – appointed rank of Cpl

16.10.1918 – appointed rank of L/Sgt

Ernest transferred to the reserves on 6th February 1919 with the rank of Sgt and his given address at this time is 26 campo Lane, Sheffield.

Ernest died in Sheffield aged 42 in 1936 and is buried in the Norton Cemetery.
