678 Pte Herbert COOK 5th York and Lancaster Regiment.
Herbert was born in Rotherham c.1890. He first appears in the census of 1901 living at 3 Thomas Street, Masbro, Rotherham with his parents Henry and Emma. Aged 11 he is shown as a worker employed as a box mender. The 1911 census shows him at the same address employed as a packing case repairer.
Herbert had enlisted into the territorial force with the 5th York and Lancaster Regiment on the 26th May 1908. he was shown then living at 3 Thomas Street and employed as a Woodworker. He was retained under the Army Acts for continued service on the 5th August 1914 and at some time after this was allocated service number 200050.
He would enter france on the 13th April 1915 and remain there until the 25th May 1916 when he returned to England.
On the 3rd of May 1917 he would transfer to the 7th Coy Labour Corps with service number 194363.
He was transferred to the reserves on the 13th March 1919 and his address now is shown as 17 Warwick Street, Masbro, Rotherham.
