Thomas was born at Swinton, Rotherham in 1898 but can be seen from the census record to have moved with his family to Tankersley Farm by 1901 and subsequently Andrew Carr Farm, Grenoside by 1911 where he is employed as a milkman.

Thomas has initially enlisted with the York and Lancaster Regiment with service number 4794 and entered France on the 1st May 1915. He was at some point transferred to the Machine Gun Corps and given service number 154666.

No service papers survive for Thomas but we are fortunate that the book Grenoside Heroes 1914 – 1918 records his own testimony of how he came to lose both his feet.

Thomas passed away on the 24th February 1987 at Sheffield.
