He would enter France on the 8th September 1914 and return to England on the 19th October 1914. He was awarded the 1914 star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
On his return to England he was transferred to civilian service at the J.H. Andrews Toledo Steel Works. The reason for this is unclear but it appears he was no longer fit for active service as he was awarded the Silver War Badge serial number 371396 and discharged on the 5th March 1917 at which time he resides at 117 Greenland Road, Attercliffe. At some point he must have lost his badge as his medal index card shows it was found and returned by the police.
